iPad: eBook Reader?

Besides being a platform for watching movies and video, surfing the web, and listening to music, the iPad is now competing in the eBook reader market. At a price that isn't significantly higher than other eBook readers, eBook enthusiasts are turning to the iPad for its added features that put it above the Kindle and Nook.

Similar to other eBook readers, customers can buy eBooks from a online store. For the iPad, this is the iBookStore or the iBooks app. Unfortunately, the offerings of the iBooks library isn't as extensive as those for other eBook readers. This is expected to increase over time, making the iPad a large competitor in the eBook reader market.

Transfering eBooks to the iPad

The iPad is compatible with eBooks published in the ePub format. In order to read PDF files on the iPad, you'll have to download a special app. For those who already own eBooks for another platform, such as the Kindle, there is no need to repurchase them. The makers of both the Kindle and the Nook readers have made apps that will allow you to read from your existing library on your iPad.

iBooks Alternatives

Due to the limited offerings in the iBooks library, along with the DRM and prices, many iPad owners are searching for alternatives. Because of the aforementioned compatibility with Kindle books, iPad owners can use the Kindle store as their primary eBook purchasing platform.

Newer services made specifically for the iPad, such as MyPadMedia are also becoming popular. MyPadMedia is a service that allows unlimited legal downloads of popular eBooks, novels, comics, and newspapers for a one time fee. Many iPad users are seeing this as a cheaper alternative to buying eBooks individually. MyPadMedia is also compatible with other Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPod Touch.
